DOCX keeps real structure — headings, lists, and emphasis become proper Markdown (via mammoth + turndown). PDFs have no built-in structure, so paragraphs and headings are reconstructed from text position and font size; scanned/image PDFs have no selectable text and aren’t supported (no OCR). Everything runs locally — the same extraction approach grove uses to index documents.
